Coincidence? I Think Not

There are numbers that repeatedly pop up in the Bible that seems to have a common theme about them. The number 40 is such a example. 40 appears in the Bible about 146 times and seems to demark times of testing, trial or probation. The first times God uses the number 40 in the Bible is here,

Genesis 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

There are many other numbers in the Bible that when you see them a common connotation is present if you’ve been paying attention. Today I want to address something I try to pay attention to when it comes to Bible numbers and the Hebrew calendar.

Beyond reasonable coincidence, the 1st and 2nd Jewish temples built in Jerusalem were destroyed on the Hebrew calendar day of the 9th of Av. Av is the 11th month on the Hebrew civil calendar so you might say it was a 9-11 incident.

Another Bible number that has a common connotation linked to it is 17 and especially when it falls on a Hebrew calendar day. You might say Biblically, the 17th day of some Hebrew months mark a day of “new beginnings.” Jesus arose from the grave on the 17th of Nisan.

• Nisan 17, Noah’s Ark safely rested on Mt. Ararat (Gen 8:4) Note that the seventh month was later designated as the first month at the time of the Exodus (Ex. 12:2).
• Nisan 17, Hebrews entered Egypt (Exo 12:40-41) 430 years before deliverance.
• Nisan 17, Moses led the Israelites through the Parting of the Red Sea (Exo 3:18, 5:3)
• Nisan 17, Israel entered and ate the first fruit of the Promised Land (Joshua 5:10-12)
• Nisan 17, The cleansing of the Temple by Hezekiah (eight hundred years after entering the promised land. (2 Chronicles 29:1-28)
• Nisan 17, Queen Esther saved the Jews from Elimination (Esther 3:12, 5:1)

Interestly though, the 1st time the 17th day of a Hebrew calendar month is used in the Bible is in the same chapter the number 40 is. It’s directly related to the 40 days and nights of rain known as “Noah’s Flood.”

Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

The 2nd month of the Genesis calendar is known as Cheshvan. Oddly enough Cheshvan is the 8th month of the religious calendar which starts with Nisan. The number 8 is widely accepted a the number of “New Beginnings.”

From time to time I try to remember to look at the date of current events and compare them to the day it falls on the Jewish calendar. A few years ago I was getting ready for church one Sunday morning. It happened to be August 6th and it was the anniversary of the day I had cataract surgery on my right eye. A couple of eye doctors had said my eye had a dystrophy that could not be surgically corrected a couple years before it actually was. They were totally wrong and my eyesight was completely restored. I had become totally blind in that eye.

That Sunday morning as I remembered the day I could truly say, “I was blind but now I can see” a thought came to me. What day was it on the Jewish calendar? I looked it up and it “just so happened” to be on the 9th of Av. As I sat there I thought, “for the Israelites, that day should have been a day of rejoicing. They had reports of their promised land to be excited about. But instead, it was a day of cursing, sorrow and judgment. God said that because of their lack of faith in Him they would wonder around the desert for 40 years until all the unbelieving generation had passed away.”

I literally wept as I realized what the 9th of Av should have been to them and in reality was to me, a day to rejoice over.

Now to get to the point of this post. A major current event is coming up on the 17th of Cheshvan this year. There is absolutely no denying that it will be a line of demarcation for a “New Beginning.” This day will affect the entire world in some form or another. The “eyes of the world” are literally on this day. Maybe you are a little curious as to what this day is on our calendar.

As you can see it’s November the 4th, the day after our election day. Will we know who won the election when we wake up on the “Morning After” election day? I don’t know but God knows!!!

Lets throw one more 40 into the mix of “coincidences.” 40 days after November 4th, on the 17th day of the 2nd month of the original Hebrew calendar (before Exodus) is December 14th. What’s important about December 14th you might ask? It’s the day the electoral college will cast their votes to officially elect the 46th president of the United States of America. Noah’s ark went through 40 days and nights of dark stormy rains. Enough to flood the entire earth combined with the fountains of the deep God opened.

Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

This isn’t a Christian song but it’s very appropriate. Hopefully someday soon we will remove all the labels that divide us, democrats – republicans, black – white, liberal – conservative. Why does it often take events like our 9-11 before we label ourselves “Americans” above all else and try to work together for our common good? All those groups I mentioned are not the enemy of each other. Satan is the enemy.

Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [b]wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
(.b Ephesians 6:11 schemings)

One last note. There is no Hebrew word that means “coincidence.” In Hebrew logic, everything is “a happening of God.” If He is the Sovereign of the Universe as I believe He Is, NOTHING Happens without His knowledge or permission.

There is one name in the Bible if have found to be of interest though,

“Accident of God, Event of God”
